SHOWNOTES

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to slip into survival mode without even realising it. Survival mode is when you’re just getting by, doing the bare minimum to keep up with daily demands, but without feeling truly fulfilled or in control.

Recognising the signs of survival mode is the first step toward reclaiming your life and thriving again. Here are five key indicators that you might be stuck in survival mode, along with actionable steps to break free:

1. Constant Exhaustion
Perpetual exhaustion is one of the most telling signs of survival mode. If you’re always tired, no matter how much sleep you get, your body might be signaling that it’s overwhelmed. This exhaustion isn’t just physical—it often includes mental and emotional fatigue.

How to Get Out:
Prioritise rest and self-care. This doesn’t just mean getting more sleep—though that’s important—but also taking time for activities that recharge you mentally and emotionally, like meditation, hobbies, or spending time in nature.

2. Feeling Disconnected
In survival mode, you might feel emotionally detached from those around you, even from yourself. Relationships may suffer because you’re too focused on just making it through the day to invest in meaningful connections.

How to Get Out:
Reconnect with the people who matter most. Schedule time to catch up with friends, engage in heartfelt conversations, or simply spend quality time with loved ones. Also, reconnect with yourself through journaling or mindfulness practices to help you stay present.

3. Operating on Autopilot
If you feel like you’re going through the motions, doing the same things every day without a real sense of purpose or fulfilment, it’s a classic sign of being stuck in survival mode.

How to Get Out:
Set small, intentional goals that align with your values. Whether it’s learning something new, starting a passion project, or making a positive change in your routine, taking purposeful actions can help you break out of autopilot and live more consciously.

4. Heightened Anxiety or Irritability
Survival mode often manifests as increased anxiety or irritability. Constant stress can make even minor issues feel overwhelming, leading to heightened anxiety or frequent irritability.

How to Get Out:
Incorporate stress management techniques into your daily routine, such as deep breathing exercises, regular physical activity, or relaxation techniques like yoga or progressive muscle relaxation. Reducing stress will help you regain emotional balance and perspective.

5. Neglecting Self-Care
When survival mode takes over, self-care is often the first thing to go. You might skip meals, neglect exercise, or ignore your mental and emotional well-being, all in an effort to just get through the day.

How to Get Out:
Re-establish a self-care routine that addresses your physical, mental, and emotional needs. This could be as simple as eating regular, nutritious meals, setting aside time for relaxation, or engaging in activities that bring you joy and fulfilment. Remember, self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity.

Breaking Free: The Path to Thriving

Recognising that you’re in survival mode is a powerful first step, but the real transformation happens when you commit to taking action. By prioritising self-care, reconnecting with what matters, and making intentional changes to your routine, you can transition from just surviving to truly thriving.
