About Irene Miller

Irene Miller is the kind of nonna whose wisdom can’t be found in a textbook. Born in Perth in 1952 to Sicilian parents who immigrated to Western Australia after the war, Irene grew up surrounded by the warmth of a tight-knit Italian community. Her father arrived from Sicily in 1949, followed by her mother and sister two years later, and their family became part of a wave of new beginnings in post-war Perth.

The first in her family born on Australian soil, Irene experienced the clash and blend of two cultures firsthand — Italian traditions in an Australian world. She remembers school lunches of parmigiana and steak sandwiches she’d hide in a post box because she longed for Vegemite like the other kids. Yet she also remembers the joy of long weekends with family and friends, crabbing, mushroom picking, and cooking enormous shared meals from whatever they gathered.
