Vicki Robin has a question for women over fifty who did everything “right” financially and still feel exposed: what if the fix isn’t more money, it’s more community?

Her In-Home Suites project turns surplus space, basements, over-garage rooms, into dignified, affordable housing for the essential workers your community actually needs, while generating income for the homeowner. It’s a real answer to a housing crisis quietly hitting women over fifty in both Australia and the US, built on mutual aid rather than waiting for a broken system to fix itself.

Vicki co-wrote Your Money or Your Life, the 1.5 million copy bestseller that sparked the FIRE movement and was called by the New York Times the seminal guide to the new morality of personal money management. But this conversation is about what she’s building now.

If you’ve done everything “right” financially and still feel exposed, this one is for you.

Aging is a journey from the “Queen” (60s to 70s) to the “Elder” (80s+), where the focus shifts from active innovation to integrating one’s past to become a resource for others.

The “In-Home Suites” project converts surplus home space into affordable, private rentals to house essential workers (teachers, nurses) while generating income for homeowners.

Community is the antidote to systemic failures, such as the housing crisis. Mutual aid and grassroots organising are essential because the system is not designed for individual wellbeing.

For women 50+ facing financial fear, the path forward is community. Find existing support groups (e.g. churches, senior agencies) to reduce shame and access resources.

Topics

The Problem: Financial Insecurity for Women 50+

Many women 50+ feel financially insecure despite following traditional rules.

This insecurity is a systemic failure, not an individual one, caused by a system that is not designed for individual wellbeing.

The resulting “moral injury” is a loss of dignity from being forced into unworthy situations.

The Solution: Community & Creative Adaptation

Community is the primary solution to systemic failures because it provides mutual aid when institutions fail.

In-Home Suites Project

Goal: Create affordable rentals for essential workers (teachers, nurses) who cannot afford to live in their communities.

Method: Homeowners convert surplus space (basements, over-garage apartments) into private suites with a bathroom, kitchenette and external door.

Benefits:

Homeowners: Generate income, potentially through work-trade (e.g. gardening, pet-sitting).

Renters: Gain affordable, dignified housing.

Finding Community

Join existing groups (e.g. churches, senior agencies) to find support and resources.

Start small by “lurking” in online groups to build confidence before participating.

The Framework: Aging as a Journey

Aging is a distinct journey with evolving priorities.

“Queen” Phase (60s to 70s)

A period of empowerment, stability and freedom.

Focus on leveraging skills and networks for active innovation.

“Elder” Phase (80s+)

The focus shifts to integrating one’s past (“alchemy”) to become a resource for others.

It requires shedding the “warrior cape” of individual struggle and embracing a role of presence and participation.

Elders are “made by society”, requiring a community that needs and recognises their wisdom.
