Why Suppressing Anger Makes You Tired
The link between emotional repression and adrenal fatigue

The Exhaustion No One Connects to Anger

You’re exhausted — not just “need a nap” tired, but the kind of soul-deep fatigue that coffee, supplements, and even sleep can’t fix. You’re doing all the “right things” — being good, being helpful, being nice — and still… you wake up tired. You crash at 3pm. You’re wired but flat.

If that sounds familiar, here’s the truth: you might be tired because you’re suppressing anger. Not table-flipping rage. Not road-rage screaming. But the slow-burn, chest-tightening, smile-through-your-teeth anger women have been taught to repress forever.

The unspoken thoughts like:

  • “I shouldn’t feel this way.”

  • “I’m overreacting.”

  • “It’s not worth the fight.”

  • “I just want to keep the peace.”

Here’s the thing: you can’t “nice” your way out of adrenal fatigue if what’s driving it is emotional suppression.

What Happens in Your Body When You Swallow Anger

Anger is energy. It’s meant to move through the body and out. When you express it healthily, it completes the stress cycle. When you don’t, it gets stored, creating a constant, low-grade fight-or-flight response.

Here’s the cost of chronic suppression:

  • Adrenals on high alert, pumping cortisol.

  • Nervous system stuck in fight, flight, or freeze.

  • Weakened immune system.

  • Disrupted digestion, sleep, and hormones.

Chronic anger suppression = chronic stress = adrenal burnout. You don’t just “get over” anger by ignoring it. You metabolise it — or it metabolises you.

Why We Do It (And Why It’s Time to Stop)

Most of us weren’t taught how to handle anger. Instead, we learned to:

  • Be good.

  • Be easy.

  • Be quiet.

  • Be likeable.

So we turned it inward — burying it under busyness, perfectionism, and people-pleasing. We became the “strong ones” who never make a fuss. But that strength comes at a cost: energy, confidence, connection, and health.

Your body knows when your truth is silenced. It doesn’t care how “nice” you are — it cares if you feel safe to be real. And sometimes, real means angry. That’s not weakness. That’s health.

BAM Ways to Release Anger and Reclaim Energy

  1. Name It Fast – Say it or write it down: “I’m pissed off.” “That crossed a boundary.”

  2. Move It Physically – Walk hard, punch a pillow, dance it out, or throw ice. Get the fire OUT.

  3. Sound It Out – Scream in the car. Growl into a towel. Vocal release clears the pressure valve.

  4. Set the Boundary – Try: “That doesn’t work for me.” “I’m not available for that.”

  5. Ditch Being ‘Nice’ – Kind doesn’t mean doormat. You can be soft and fierce.

  6. Reset Your Nervous System – Ground yourself with breathwork, cold water, or gentle movement.

💧 Support your reset with aromatherapy blends like Serenity (Frankincense, Geranium, Lavender, Ylang Ylang) or Calm Kids (Vetiver, Lime, Lavender, Cedarwood). Cedarwood especially helps calm the nervous system and support focus.

Final Words from the Bare Arse Truth Chair

You’re not tired because you’re weak. You’re tired because you’re holding in a fire that was meant to move.

This isn’t about rage — it’s about truth. When you honour your emotions, your body stops running on emergency mode all day long. Your truth, spoken from the heart, is sacred.

So let your heart speak. Then watch your energy rise.
