Your DNA is not your destiny. In this episode, Jen busts the myth that your family’s health history seals your fate and shows you how epigenetics, the way your genes express themselves, can be influenced by the choices you make every day. From colourful whole foods to quality sleep, calming your nervous system, daily movement, and cutting back on ultra-processed foods, Jen shares her Bare Arse Minimum (BAM) tips to help you take control of your health. You can’t change your genes, but you can change how they behave — starting today.
SHOW NOTES
It’s time to bust one of the biggest myths in health — that our DNA is our destiny.
Not on my watch.
If you’ve ever said, “Well, heart disease runs in my family,” or “I guess I’m just built this way,” I want you to stick around. What I’m about to share is science-backed and BAM-approved.
Let’s get into it.
First things first… can we change our DNA?
Nope — you can’t swap out your genes like socks. You’ve got what you’ve got.
But here’s the kicker: you can influence how those genes behave. That’s called epigenetics.
Think of it this way:
-
Your DNA is the hardware — your body’s blueprint.
-
Epigenetics is the software — it decides which parts of the hardware switch on or stay quiet.
So maybe your family has a history of diabetes, Alzheimer’s, anxiety, or autoimmune conditions. That doesn’t mean you’re doomed. But if you eat poorly, don’t sleep, live in constant stress, and barely move, you’re basically inviting those genes to switch on.
The good news? You can flip the switch the other way.

Let’s BAM it down into real, doable actions:
🍳 Eat Real, Whole Foods
-
Skip the beige and the packet numbers.
-
Your genes love colour — greens, berries, nuts, seeds, oily fish, olive oil.
-
Rule of thumb: if your great-grandma wouldn’t recognise it as food, eat it rarely.
😴 Prioritise Sleep
-
Sleep is when your body repairs your genes.
-
Lights out by 10 pm.
-
Try magnesium, dim lighting, and no phones. Old school, but effective.
🧘♀️ Calm Your Nervous System
-
Stress is a major gene agitator.
-
Try the Vagus Nerve Love Tap (two quick sniffs, one long sigh).
-
Walk in nature, do a brain dump, meditate, or take adaptogen herbs.
-
Your nervous system is like a dog — train it daily or it will misbehave.
🚶♀️ Move Daily
-
No need for extreme workouts.
-
Brisk walks, stretching, stairs, or dancing to your favourite song all count.
-
Movement tells your genes, “We’re alive, we’re thriving — no need for the stress switch.”
🥤 Cut Back on Ultra-Processed Foods
-
Treats are fine in moderation (yes, even ice cream).
-
But when every meal is from a box, your genes suffer.
-
Whole foods fight inflammation; processed foods cause chaos.
Here’s what I want you to remember:
✨ You are not your DNA.
✨ You are not your family’s health history.
✨ You’re not stuck with a fate sealed in genetic concrete.
We are the DJs, the conductors, the remix queens. We can influence our genes every single day.
Don’t wait for a full health overhaul — just start with one BAM tip today.
Add a colourful veggie, go to bed 30 minutes earlier, or try the Love Tap.
Simple. Doable. Powerful.
Because you can’t change your genes —
But you sure as hell can change how they behave.
