SHOW NOTES

You don’t need to have diabetes to be dealing with insulin resistance. In fact, for many women over 40, especially during peri and post menopause, insulin resistance is quietly messing with your energy, mood, metabolism and waistline — and you might not even realise it. In this episode, Jen cuts through the confusion and explains what insulin resistance really is, how it creeps in, and why it’s so common in midlife.

What is Insulin Resistance?

Insulin is like your body’s traffic controller for blood sugar. You eat, sugar enters the blood, and insulin helps shuttle it into your cells for energy. But when your cells stop responding properly, insulin can’t do its job. Sugar stays in your blood longer, and your body says, “Quick, store it as fat.” That’s insulin resistance. And for women in midlife, it’s incredibly common and incredibly sneaky.

The Signs? Not Just Weight Gain

You might think, “I’m not eating more, so why am I gaining?” Here’s what insulin resistance can look like in real life:
• Stubborn belly fat
• Afternoon crashes
• Sugar cravings and constant hunger
• Mood swings or feeling flat
• Brain fog or forgetfulness
• Poor sleep and energy dips
• Feeling hangry between meals

Sound familiar? You’re not broken. Your hormones are shifting, and insulin is part of that cascade.

How Midlife Hormones Fuel the Chaos and What You Can Do

As estrogen drops, insulin sensitivity often drops with it. Add more stress, less muscle and poor sleep, and you’ve got the perfect storm for insulin resistance. But here’s the BAM truth — you can turn it around. No diets. No punishment.

BAM It With:

• Protein with every meal — Keeps you fuller, steadies blood sugar and builds lean muscle (your best sugar sponge)
• Walk after eating — Ten to fifteen minutes of movement after meals helps your muscles use that sugar straight away
• Strength training two to three times per week — Muscle is magic. It’s metabolically active and improves insulin sensitivity fast
• Sleep like it’s medicine — Poor sleep equals higher cortisol which worsens insulin resistance. Prioritise seven to eight hours
• Boundaries and adaptogens — Stress raises cortisol which makes your body hold onto belly fat. Calm your nervous system with strong boundaries and adrenal-loving adaptogens like ashwagandha or rhodiola

The Bottom Line?

You don’t need to go keto, fast for eighteen hours a day or cut every carb.
You just need to work with your body, not fight it. Midlife isn’t the problem — the real problem is we were never taught how to adapt to it.

Let’s change that. Let’s Rise Strong.
