The Real Culprit Behind Menopause Mayhem
Let’s get real—menopause isn’t a disease. It’s a natural life transition, not a medical emergency. But for so many women, it feels like one. Why? Because we’re arriving at it already depleted.
After more than 30 years as a naturopath, I’ve seen the same pattern time and time again: women hit perimenopause while running on empty. We’re juggling work, family, aging parents, and a society that glorifies being constantly “on.” By the time menopause shows up, our adrenal glands—the body’s key stress responders—are fried.
And when your adrenals are shot, your body can’t handle the hormonal shifts of menopause. What should be a smooth change becomes a full-blown nightmare. This isn’t just theory. It’s the reality for millions of women.
The mainstream medical approach often misses the mark. Naturopaths look deeper—we focus on what’s happening underneath the symptoms. And unfortunately, we’re still often the last resort for women who are desperate for real answers.
Here’s what’s actually going on behind the scenes:
During menopause, as the ovaries reduce hormone production, the adrenal glands are meant to step in—especially to produce androgens like DHEA, which can be converted into oestrogen and testosterone. These hormones play a key role in energy, mood, libido, and muscle tone.
But here’s the kicker: if you’re already burned out and your adrenals are flatlined, they can’t do their job. This is why women with adrenal fatigue often experience more intense menopause symptoms—it’s not just about hormones; it’s about resilience.
Slapping on HRT or hormone support without addressing your adrenal health is like putting out spot fires while the forest is still burning.

The Real Solution? Rhythm, Not Just Remedies.

After decades in clinical practice, I know that supplements and diets alone won’t cut it. What really works? Mindset, rhythm, and daily habits that honour your nervous system.
That’s why I developed my three-part Neuro series:
-
NeuroFuel: Feeding your brain and body with nourishing food, uplifting thoughts, and positive connections.
-
NeuroRest: Creating true recovery through deep rest, stillness, and boundaries that protect your energy.
-
NeuroLift: Reintroducing joy, laughter, and pleasure to naturally boost your happy hormones.
This triad helps women not just “cope” with menopause—but actually rise through it.
The BAM Approach: Bare Ass Minimum, Maximum Impact
Forget the complicated wellness routines. I live by the Bare Ass Minimum (BAM)—simple, sustainable habits that actually support your adrenal health:
-
Sleep: In bed by 10 PM. It’s not negotiable—this is when your body resets.
-
Nutrition: Eat close to nature 80% of the time. Real food, not processed crap.
-
Movement: Gentle, joyful movement like walking, dancing, or yoga. No need to flog your body at the gym.
-
Fun: Prioritise fun and laughter—they are medicine for your nervous system.
-
Connection: Be around people who light you up, not drain you.
-
Rest: Build in downtime. Every minute before 10 PM is like gold for your adrenal recharge.
These aren’t hacks—they’re essential. They refill your tank so your body has the reserves to handle what’s next.
Prevention Starts Now—No Matter Your Age
Whether you’re in your 30s, 40s, or already navigating menopause, now is the time to act. Don’t wait for burnout to hit.
Start here:
-
Manage Stress: Use tools like meditation, journaling, or nature time.
-
Use Adaptogens: These herbs are incredible for supporting your adrenals.
-
Eat Well: Stick to whole, nutrient-dense food. 80/20 is your magic ratio.
-
Prioritise Sleep: 7–9 hours a night is ideal. Every extra minute before 10 PM counts.
-
Stay Active: Walking is your secret weapon—especially for tired adrenals.
-
Get Support: You don’t have to do this alone. Community and coaching matter.
Remember: menopause isn’t the problem. Burnout is. When you support your body before the chaos, menopause becomes a rite of passage—not a battle.
And if you’re already in the thick of it, it’s not too late. You can rebuild from here.
