Many of us take pride in being self-reliant, tackling challenges alone, and avoiding asking for help. While independence is a strength, it can also be a barrier to growth and fulfillment. True transformation happens when we step outside our comfort zones and embrace the vulnerability of seeking support. In this episode, Jen explores how these actions can unlock greater success and a more fulfilling life.

Mobilise, Don’t Panic: Managing Toxins for Long-Term Health
In today’s world, completely avoiding toxins is nearly impossible. They’re in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and even the products we use daily. While this can feel overwhelming, the focus shouldn’t be on eliminating every toxin but on supporting your body’s natural ability to process and remove them.
Drawing from my book F*ck the Stress, let’s explore practical ways to take charge of your health in a toxin-filled world.
1. Understanding Toxic Load
Your body is naturally equipped to handle toxins, with organs like the liver, kidneys, and skin working to filter and expel waste. However, when exposure exceeds your body’s ability to detoxify, it leads to toxic overload—manifesting as fatigue, brain fog, digestive issues, or chronic illness.
Key Practices:
- Support Your Liver: Eat liver-friendly foods like leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale), and lemons.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink at least 3 litres of water daily to help your kidneys flush out toxins.
- Sweat It Out: Exercise and saunas aid in toxin elimination through the skin, your body’s largest detox organ.
By understanding and managing your toxic load, you allow your body to detox effectively and maintain balance.
2. Mobilisation Over Accumulation
When toxins stagnate in the body, they can cause long-term harm. The goal is to keep them moving and prevent them from accumulating in tissues and organs.
Key Practices:
- Fibre is Your Friend: Fibre binds to toxins in the gut and eliminates them through digestion. Include oats, chia seeds, and vegetables in your diet.
- Move Your Lymph: Your lymphatic system lacks a pump, so gentle movement (yoga, walking, rebounding) helps circulate fluids and remove toxins.
- Dry Brushing: Exfoliate your skin with a natural-bristle brush before showering to promote lymphatic drainage.
Keeping toxins mobilised ensures they don’t build up, protecting your long-term health.
3. Minimising Daily Exposure
While total avoidance of toxins isn’t realistic, you can significantly reduce exposure through small but impactful changes.
Key Practices:
- Choose Clean Products: Use non-toxic cleaning and personal care products free from parabens, phthalates, and artificial fragrances.
- Eat Organic When Possible: Reduce pesticide exposure by prioritising organic produce from the Dirty Dozenlist.
- Filter Your Water: A good filtration system removes contaminants like chlorine, heavy metals, and microplastics.
Reducing daily toxin exposure lightens your body’s detox burden, allowing it to function more efficiently.
4. Stress and Toxins: A Double Burden
Chronic stress impairs digestion, weakens immunity, and hinders detoxification—making it just as harmful as toxins themselves. Managing stress is essential for effective detoxification.
Key Practices:
- Breathe Deeply: Deep breathing lowers stress and oxygenates cells, supporting detox pathways.
- Meditation & Mindfulness: These reduce cortisol, which, when elevated, slows detoxification.
- Prioritise Rest: Sleep is when the body repairs itself and processes toxins—aim for 7-9 hours per night.
- Take Adaptogens: Herbs like ashwagandha and rhodiola help regulate stress and support detox functions.
Managing stress is just as critical as reducing toxin exposure, ensuring your body stays resilient.
5. Regular Maintenance is Key
Detoxification isn’t a one-time event—it’s an ongoing process. Consistently supporting your body’s natural detox functions leads to long-term health and vitality.
Key Practices:
- Seasonal Detox: Consider a gentle cleanse at the start of each season to reset your system.
- Listen to Your Body: Fatigue, headaches, or skin breakouts can signal that your detox pathways need support.
- Stay Consistent: Small, daily habits are more effective than occasional extreme detox measures.
Regular maintenance helps prevent toxic buildup and keeps you feeling your best year-round.
Thriving in a Toxic World
While avoiding toxins entirely isn’t possible, you have the power to reduce their impact. By supporting your body’s natural detox processes, minimising exposure, managing stress, and maintaining consistent healthy habits, you can thrive.
It’s not about perfection but about taking intentional, sustainable steps toward health. Your body is incredibly resilient—give it the support it needs, and it will take care of you.
