Life is Happening for Us, Not to Us – Embracing Growth and Finding Joy in Every Experience
There’s a gift in every experience life throws our way.
When I burned out, I could never have imagined the journey that would lead me here today.
When I joined the Australian Army at 17, only to leave three years later because being an openly gay woman was seen as incompatible with serving my country, I felt the weight of rejection.
Yet, as I look back, I see the gifts hidden in those challenges. Every difficult experience, no matter how painful, has carried within it the seeds of growth and transformation.
I’ve come to understand that life is happening for me, not to me.
We all face moments when life feels heavy or overwhelming, leaving us questioning why.
But what if we flipped the script? What if, instead of seeing life as something that happens to us, we recognised it as something that happens for us?
This mindset shift can transform the way we approach life, opening us to profound growth, resilience, and joy. By embracing this perspective, we can step beyond simply existing and begin truly living.
The Gift in Every Experience
When we choose to see life as happening for us, every event—whether joyous, painful, or mundane—becomes an opportunity to learn, grow, and evolve.
Challenges no longer feel like insurmountable obstacles meant to knock us down; instead, they become stepping stones that reveal hidden strengths and wisdom.
Difficult experiences are often life’s way of teaching us something profound—resilience, patience, courage. These lessons may not always be clear in the moment, but over time, they shape us into who we are meant to be. When we embrace this idea, setbacks transform into moments of growth and gratitude, helping us realise that even the hardest times have a purpose.
Reframing Setbacks as Opportunities
The beauty of life often lies in its unexpected twists—the moments that shake us, yet ultimately ground us.
Living with the belief that life is happening for us invites us to become active participants in our own story, embracing opportunities and savouring the small, often-overlooked moments.
This perspective shift is liberating. It replaces the question, “Why me?” with “What can I learn?” and “How can I use this?”
When I burned out in my 20s, I initially fell into a spiral of self-pity. I loved what I was doing, and the burnout felt like an unfair punishment. But with time, I came to see it as a turning point—an opportunity to reevaluate, rebuild, and eventually lead a life I never dreamed possible.
By shifting my mindset, I turned a season of struggle into a stepping stone toward joy and fulfilment.
How to Adopt This Mindset
Bringing this perspective into your daily life starts with intentionality. It requires a commitment to finding meaning in every experience, no matter how small or challenging.
Here are some ways to cultivate this mindset:
- Practice self-reflection: Take time to understand what each experience is teaching you.
- Embrace mindfulness: Be present with your emotions and observe them without judgment.
- Welcome change: See challenges as part of a greater plan that supports your growth.
When we stop resisting life’s difficulties and instead see them as allies in our journey, we build resilience and a deeper sense of inner peace.
The Power of Choosing Growth
Choosing to see life as happening for us fosters gratitude, clarity, and intentional living.
This perspective empowers us to step into our authentic selves, opening the door to greater joy, fulfilment, and meaning.
Life, with all its surprises and uncertainties, isn’t here to work against us. It’s here to guide us, challenge us, and help us grow into the best version of ourselves. When we embrace this belief, we free ourselves from the weight of frustration and step into a life filled with purpose, gratitude, and possibility.
So, the next time life feels overwhelming, pause and ask yourself:
What is this teaching me? How can I use this to grow?
You may just discover that life, in all its unpredictability, is exactly what you need.
