SHOWNOTES

But Jen, I just can’t do it!

Choosing grit over quitting is about tapping into our inner strength, staying the course through adversity, and ultimately unlocking a level of success that talent and intelligence alone cannot guarantee. In a world that often glorifies instant success and quick wins, perseverance and resilience—grit—are some of the most undervalued traits for achieving long-term goals.

Think about a goal you have—whether it’s health, finances, fitness, relationships, or writing a book. How will you feel in 3-6 months when you’ve achieved it? How will you feel in 6 months if you haven’t? At the start of April, I set a goal to write my new book and have it ready for sale in six months. It’ll be ready in just three weeks—one week shy of my six-month target.

The Power of Persistence

At its core, grit is a blend of passion and perseverance—the determination to keep moving forward, even in the face of challenges. As soon as we commit to a goal, the universe seems to test how badly we want it. Talent might open doors, but it’s grit that keeps us going when those doors feel locked. Think of Thomas Edison, who invented the lightbulb after thousands of failed attempts.

Resilience in the Face of Failure

Failure is an inevitable part of any journey towards meaningful achievement. To learn to surf, I had to fall off my surfboard. If I wasn’t falling, I wasn’t pushing myself to learn. Those with grit don’t see failure as a permanent setback but as an opportunity to learn, adapt, and grow. I celebrate falling off because it means I’m challenging myself. Like the rising stars at Wimbledon taught me, you have to lose to win. Embracing failure as a stepping stone helps build the resilience needed to face even greater challenges.

Passion as a Driving Force

Grit isn’t just about endurance; it’s fuelled by passion. Passion—your why—provides the energy to keep going when things get tough. It’s what makes the hard work meaningful and the sacrifices worthwhile. When you feel like giving up, remember why you started and why you’ve held on this long.

The Long-Term Perspective

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get discouraged by slow progress. However, true success often requires a long-term perspective. Grit means staying focused on your goals over extended periods, even when immediate results aren’t visible. This commitment to the long game leads to mastery. It’s important to allow ourselves to be “bad” at something long enough to become great. That mindset requires super grit.

Strategies for Cultivating Grit

Cultivating grit is a conscious effort, and here are some strategies to help:

  1. Set Clear, Long-Term Goals: Well-defined goals give you direction and purpose.
  2. Embrace Challenges: See obstacles as opportunities to develop new skills.
  3. Develop a Growth Mindset: Believe in your ability to improve through effort.
  4. Build a Support System: Surround yourself with people who inspire and encourage you.
  5. Be Kind to Yourself: Acknowledge your progress and be gentle in the face of setbacks.

Choosing grit over quitting isn’t just about pushing through—it’s about consistently showing up, even when you’re off track. Consistency doesn’t mean being perfect; it means noticing when you’ve strayed and finding the strength to come back. Consistency always wins.

Embracing the journey, with all its highs and lows, allows us to discover the depth of our potential. The next time you face a challenge, remember that grit—not quitting—is the true key to greatness.
