The number one distraction I’ve faced in the past is notifications. This is how I overcame that distraction. While walking my dog Darcy this morning, I noticed how she could hold her focus despite potential distractions. Darcy is a purebred Cocker Spaniel, a hunting dog breed. Normally, they would hunt pheasants and other birds in Europe. When Darcy sees something, her paw goes up, and she points like a true hunting dog. She had been following a scent in the park for a while and was so focused. A bird actually flew down and sat on the grass about a meter in front of her face, yet she didn’t notice it or get distracted. Generally, if there’s a bird anywhere nearby, she’s immediately alert and on point.

People who have notifications enabled for social media, emails, and various apps are constantly bombarded with distractions, yet they find themselves unable to focus. You’re setting yourself up for distraction by allowing things to ping in the background.

The solution? First, notice the issue. For me, managing distractions became crucial when I went on the road as a professional speaker amid a busy life. The most important step was turning off notifications for everything: emails, phone calls, social media, apps, and texts. My phone is on silent all day. I set an alarm if I’m expecting a call; otherwise, people can leave a voicemail, and I’ll get back to them when convenient. I show people how to treat me by setting healthy boundaries, which are vital for success. If you’ve been procrastinating and going down rabbit holes, stopping notifications can significantly improve your focus and productivity.
