SHOWNOTES
“I really want to come to that self-care appointment today, but I don’t have enough time. I promise I’ll go next time.”
How often have you cancelled a self-care appointment like a massage because you are too busy? Here in Australia, we were raised to look after everyone else first before we looked after ourselves, particularly as women. But it’s just not cool!
Our choosing – and it is a choice – to put everything else ahead of ourselves impacts our self-esteem, and we miss the physical and emotional benefit we would have received had we gone through with our self-care.
You need to know that you are important enough to look after yourself. It’s time to draw a line in the sand. Live forward into what you want in life, not what you don’t want in life.
I choose to live into a fit and healthy body so I can surf and do all of the fun things I want to do. Verses living today in a way that I don’t want to get old and not have my body work for me. Energetically the two are entirely different.
On many podcasts, you would have heard me say, what we think about, we bring about. So, don’t feed the monster. Even choosing to put ourselves first and look after ourselves consistently is different energetically to us saying, “screw you guys, I’m not going to look after you now, so I can have time to look after myself.” Don’t feed the monster.
So, draw a line in the sand and move forward positively.
Self-care means taking care of yourself to be physically and emotionally healthy and have the reserves and coping skills to deal with and enjoy life.
9 ways you can consciously care for yourself
- Dedicate 15 minutes a day to you. In my book, The 7 Steps to Sanity, I discuss how 15 minutes = 1% of your day.
- Be gentle with yourself. Speak kindly.
- JOMO is the joy of missing out – fall in love with saying no because you don’t want to. Ask yourself whether you are doing it because you are obliged to do it or want to do it.
- Be realistic. I’m a realistic idealist.
- Make sleep your priority. There is no way you can deal with life if you’re running on empty.
- Eat right for you 80% of the time.
- Move your body daily.
- Find your tribe who will lift you up – they will inspire you to give time to you.
- Self-soothe and nurture – give yourself a physical hug and breathe deeply.
Bring these strategies into your life when you think life is too busy – you will be able to deal with life much better.
