SHOWNOTES
Be honest, have you ever said, “I’m going to start eating healthy after Christmas” or “I’m going to start exercising regularly in the New Year”?
Why?! Why do we delay and decide to start things after Christmas, in the New Year, or on a Monday?
It’s a Tuesday as I record this. Why would I wait another six days to make a change on a Monday?
This habit often comes from food habits and wanting to start a new eating plan on a Monday – but what do people do the weekend before? They binge! As soon as we tell ourselves we have to be without something, we crave it.
With less than two weeks to Christmas and a few weeks until the end of the year, there is power in starting to make a change today. If you start now, you will give yourself a tremendous head start, and what’s more, you’ll already be in flow and having ‘wins’ by the time the New Year comes in.
Research shows that most of us put on an extra 3-5kgs over Christmas. Why would you wait to gain another 3-5kgs to have a bigger goal to achieve later on?
Research also tells us that the worst time to start anything new is New Year’s Day, yet many of us set our goals of eating healthily, exercising regularly, saving money, reading books, and doing all of these things in the New Year.
There is so much emotion caught up in this that it becomes immobilising. Statistically, most people have given up on their New Year’s resolutions within the first three weeks.
How do you start now?
Mindset comes first. You have to know why you want to start the new habit. Why do you want to be healthy/exercise more/save more money? How will you feel when you achieve it? It’s the feeling that will anchor you. Your ‘why’ is what will keep you showing up consistently.
It’s not what we do 10% of the time that matters. It’s what we do 90% of the time. If you can start doing the core basics and build on those daily wins, your confidence and desire to keep going will build.
Imagine if you committed to a 20-minute walk/run/walk/run around the block from now until Christmas with your kids or partner. How different would your body look and feel in that short amount of time?
What if it was food? What if you ate close to nature 90% of the time and drank your water (33mls per kilo per day). What if you just committed to doing that between now and the end of the year?
The consistency of these core basics is what brings us the best results. And when the going gets tough, remind yourself why you started.
