SHOWNOTES
Discipline is essentially doing the opposite of what I want to do. As much as I love surfing, on those cold winter mornings, there are days where I don’t want to get out of bed.
But, in the Army, I learned that if it’s hard to do, it’s more important to do it. I needed to do the opposite of what I wanted to do. This is what self-discipline is.
Self-discipline is the ability you have to control and motivate yourself, stay on track and do what is right. Some people call it will power.
The truth is, self-discipline is a learned skill, not an innate characteristic. According to a recent study by the Vienna University of Economics and Business, self-disciplined people don’t focus on deprivation; they focus on managing conflicting goals and create structure in their life (I’ve included the study results below).
How can you be more self-disciplined?
- First and foremost, forgive yourself. Guilt doesn’t work; it just negatively reinforces the negative behaviour
- Remove temptations
- Plan for success
- Focus on motivation
- Move away from pain (go back and listen to episode 23 for more on this)
- Use aromatherapy – Thyme essential oil helps support will power
