SHOWNOTES

Have you ever thought “I don’t know what to do!” when it comes to moving forward in an area of your life? I’m here to tell you that you do know what to do. You just don’t do it.

In health, everyone knows what to do, but the reality is we let life and old sabotages beat us. We are emotional beings, and our humanness takes us off track.

What I know for sure is that we all have the potential to reach all of our goals.

All OF THEM – health, life, business, relationships, you name it. There is a big difference in knowing what you need to do and doing what you need to do.

Years ago, Karen and I launched our Aroma Insight Cards. We always knew we wanted to create an online course but did not take action until this year. COVID-19 meant that I couldn’t fly and teach the content around the world; it impacted me not only emotionally but also financially. This was the big pain point that got us to the point where we took action.

We had to have enough pain, to move towards pleasure. Perhaps it’s the same for you? Or maybe you are someone who likes to move towards pleasure. Find your motivating force – pleasure or pain.

There is this great story about an old man and a dog sitting on a verandah. The dog keeps whimpering and shuffling itself around. A guy walks past and asks, “Mate, what is wrong with your dog? It keeps whimpering and whining.” The old man says, “he’s sitting on a nail.” The guy asks, “why doesn’t he just get off the nail?” The old man replies, “he’s just not in enough pain yet.”

Human beings are the same. We’ll sit on that nail and whinge; we’ll adjust ourselves on it. But we don’t get off the nail. We love pain and suffering and to struggle. Until one day, it gets enough. If you aren’t finding yourself motivated enough by pleasure, you may need to reframe it in your mind to make the pain big enough to take action.

So, what about you? What are you procrastinating on or self-sabotaging? Is it your health, weight, exercise, relationships, what is the nail you are sitting on?

What do you want to do? What is going to make the pain or pleasure big enough for you to take action?

I know the importance of sleep, and I go to bed early five nights a week because of it. I didn’t respect sleep until I burned out in my twenties. I had to reframe my thinking to equate not enough sleep with an early death. I don’t want a bar of that, so I moved away from that pain to stay alive and well. This kind of thinking gives me the discipline to take action.

What’s the one step I can take today to move me away from that pain? Go to bed at 10pm. That’s my consistent daily action. That was my bare ass minimum (BAM).

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need big grand actions. You need to do only your BAM. So, what is your BAM you need to do today that will keep you moving one day at a time?

When I did the 800km Camino de Santiago, it dragged on and on at first.  But when I hit the halfway point, it flew by and became emotionally easier. I had the momentum to carry me.

Keep in mind that you can’t push towards pleasure.

You need to move away from the pain.

Healthy Life Hacks

So, the healthy life hacks I want to leave you with today are:

  1. Identify what you are holding yourself back on and what your pain and pleasure points are
  2. Determine your BAM that you can do daily to move from the pain point
  3. Just do your BAM
