We say “I know” by default because it is an acceptable response that implicitly agrees with the other person without necessitating a response. In this episode, Jen discusses how this can be detrimental to your success.

SHOWNOTES
Saying phrases like ‘I know’ and ‘I know that’ firstly comes off arrogant and abrasive, but secondly, be detrimental to your success.
Where you are perceived as being arrogant and abrasive others don’t want to work or collaborate with you, which can impact your bottom line. Your success.
To better understand a different perspective, don’t just listen—seek to understand. Pose questions that ask people to explain themselves further.
Acknowledge When You Are Wrong: Admitting that you are wrong when needed, and working to learn from it, is key to cultivating an open mind.
There is a huge difference between knowing something and doing or living it.
How do we know if we are doing? Your success in that area will show it. Your bank account, your health results, your fitness, your relationships.
4 ways you can reprogram your mindset and phrases
1. Replace “I know that” with “I understand,” “I’m aware,” or similar phrases.
2. Adopt active listening strategies. Ask a lot of well-thought-out questions after someone shares an opinion or idea.
3. Seek to understand before offering your own opinion. Ask clarifying questions so you can accurately confirm what you know.
4. Reframe what you know into an open-ended question to further explore the discussion.

Hi Jen I have just binged on your podcasts today whilst getting ready for work and then continued on my morning drive to work . I found it a much better way to start my day than listening to the news , which as you pointed out listening to audio books or podcasts helps us to practice listening !! I thought wow I need to listen to more pod casts whilst driving . I found myself using some of your wonderful suggestions with people and I felt happier for this. I had some great connections today, which is important in my job.
The reason I started listening to the podcast was because I had seen some of your stories on Facebook and the things you were saying made sense to me , they also helped at a difficult time . Timing is everything.. a week ago we had a home invasion and my husband got beaten up quite a bit he fought back but he was in shock for several days and he has two black eyes , that scared me as we have always felt safe and I feel safe with him he is a strong guy who can defend himself. Can I defend myself I have since wondered ? I locked myself in the bathroom and called the police, the person has been arrested but I feel nervous at home and so when my husband left for work I decided to listen to your podcast to distract me from feeling nervous. Your voice is very calming and I found myself relaxing and enjoying your talks. I spoke to my husband this evening about your podcasts and played him one , he could do with learning not to say “I know that” ! Ha ha . He understood, and I was late home after saying I was on my way and forgot to get a new key cut .. as we put more locks on the house.. so many messages today . Listening , being on time , doing what you say you will do . Love the side table story as I have had something like that done to me , but i didn’t get the lesson very quickly. Lovely to connect with you Jen and your wise women words. I love to chant also.
Hey Deb, I am so sorry to hear about your home invasion. Glad that you and your husband are both okay. Glad you are both enjoying the podcast. Please take care of yourselves. Jen
